Voices for Earth Justice staff Rich Samartino, Patty Gillis, and Naim Edwards, and summer intern Theresa Beckley-Amaya participated in the St. Paul of the Cross Passionist Retreat Center’s young adult service retreat. The first day started with a service project at our neighbor Bianca Danzy's property across the street from Hope House, where volunteers gutted the burned out house, so it can be restored as a garden center. Other volunteers cleared the back yard of brush, and painted at Hope House.
Catholic Heart Workcamp is a group of Catholic youth ministers and teens,13,000 strong this summer, in over 50 different cities, serving people and groups in need. Hundreds of teens and their mentors came to serve in Detroit this past week. For the third year in a row, Voices for Earth Justice had Catholic Heart Work Campers come and volunteer at Hope House for four days. They helped in the garden and painted a shed, the barn, and windows and doors in the education center.

In June, VEJ completed a native plant garden in partnership with D-Town Farm. The farm is run by the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network, and the garden was planted primarily to support their honey beehives. A Fresh Water Future grant funded the project. Completed by Naim and VEJ's summer intern, Theresa. The garden is designed in the image of DBCFSN's emblem. See photos of this and some of our other June activities below:
Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim, co-directors of the Forum on Religion and Ecology at Yale University (fore.yale.edu) visited Hope House in June as their first stop on an environmental tour of Detroit. They were in Detroit to lead a two day workshop at St. Paul of the Cross Passionist Retreat and Conference Center in Detroit, and show their film "Journey of the Universe" at Mercy Center in Farmington.

Students from John Hopkins University and Harvest Mission Community Church Ann Arbor & Austin, TX joined us on March 14th for a day of service during their alternative spring breaks. The 24 volunteers helped kick start Hope House's gardening and outdoor season, contributing their energy to cleaning the street, turning the compost, tilling soil for new plant beds, and cleaning up the outdoor space. The day started with a tour of the property, explanation of VEJ, and a warm-up to get to know one another and loosen up our bodies.
