IYES began in October 2008 with the support of a grant from the Michigan Public Service Commission.  IYES is a program of Voices for Earth Justice.

How IYES Works

In A Nutshell:

IYES will train 30 to 60 high school students to do basic energy audits and retrofits for low- to middle-income families.  Retrofits will include 13 services per home, such as installing programmable thermostats, weatherizing windows, and replacing showerheads.  Once trained, crews of three students and one adult volunteer will work with interested households to perform these services.  Each crew will retrofit about 15 homes by the end of May 2009. For more information, contact:

Our Vision
Believing God is revealed in all of Creation, we raise our voices as members of Earth community.  Our planet, our home, is charged with life, and its beauty expresses and nourishes our common spirituality.

Yet Earth is being threatened by  human activity.

Thus Earth-Keeping is a moral issue based on justice, and we work for right relationships with everything God creates.

Our Rationale

The global environment with its finite resources is a common concern of all peoples. The protection of Earth’s vitality, diversity, and beauty is a sacred trust. —–The Earth Charter

In Michigan, our soul is not to be found in steel and concrete, or sprawling new housing developments, or strip malls. Rather it is found in the soft petals of a trillium, the gentle whisper of a headwater stream, the vista of a Great Lakes shoreline, and the wonder in children’s eyes upon seeing their first bald eagle. —–Former Governor William Milliken

Everything you do may seem insignificant. But
it is very important that you do it. —–Gandhi

We can’t save the natural world, except by
rediscovering the sacred in nature.  —–Dr. Seyyed Hossein Nasr

The hidden environment of the human spirit is seldom mentioned in our concern for our more obvious environmental problems. We would do well to carefully reconsider this omission.
—–Vera C. Shaw

The Earth is the Lord’s and all that it holds, the world and all its inhabitants.
—–Psalm 24:1
